The Basque Country is a region with a long tradition of cycling. The roads that wind along the coast, the inland mountains, and the wine regions invite all to hop on a bike and enjoy the landscape as they go pedaling through the countryside. Many tourists, especially coming from northern Europe, decide to pedal their way around the region. To make things easier for cyclists, more and more lodging establishments are adapting their facilities to the needs of cycle enthusiasts. That is the case of Iturregi, a boutique hotel that has hosted some of the most famous actors from Hollywood like Matt Damon, Chris Hemsworth, Simon Baker, and Elsa Pataky.
Iturregi has just opened a room that is exclusively for bicycle maintenance and includes indoor parking and a space with a bicycle pump and tools for bike repairs. For more complex repairs, the hotel works with a bike workshop in the nearby village of Zarautz. Those traveling without bikes also have the option of borrowing two mountain bikes from the hotel, or renting bikes from the aforementioned workshop.
Iturregi’s faith in this sustainable means of transport is so great that they have just launched two packages for sport lovers called “Amigos de la bicicleta” (Friends of the Bike) and “Cycling Friendly.” The first includes, in addition to being able to use the indoor parking area and the tools that go along with it, lodging in a superior-class room, a gourmet breakfast, and free washing services for sports clothing. The second includes two 30-minute therapeutic massages by Massay Health Inspiration, one of San Sebastián’s most pioneering massage centers, in the room itself. With all of this, Iturregi has become a Cycling Friendly network lodge – a leading bikers’ network.
Even so, that is not the only new feature that Iturregi has to surprise its guests this year, as a new wine cellar has just been opened below the main villa. This gastronomic club can be reserved by guests for wine tasting events and even to enjoy a dinner prepared by a guest chef. This new space’s decoration comes from the mind of Daniel Rotaetxe, the same interior designer who decorated the hotel’s cozy rooms and common areas.
Iturregi was already well known for its inherent elegance, impressive outdoor pool, and the spectacular landscape of the sea and vineyards that surround it. Now, the chance to enjoy a privileged environment on a bike and to round off the day with a glass of wine and gourmet dinner can be added to all of that.
