Located in Samaniego, Remírez de Ganuza produces intense wines of excellent quality that we at BASQUE LUXURY never tire of recommending. The passion we have for this family winery is also shared by the best chefs in the Basque Country – chefs who have incorporated several of its labels to the wine lists at their restaurants. We have spoken with Martín Berasategui, Hilario Arbelaitz, Eneko Atxa, and Pedro Subijana about Remírez de Ganuza and this is what they’ve told us.

When did you first get to know about Remírez de Ganuza and what was your initial impression?
I had the luck of getting to know the winery at the beginning of its journey, and with its first wines it was clear that the company was going to be one of the gems of this country in terms of fine wines. The regularity and quality of all of their vintages is admirable.
Hilario Arbelaitz, Zuberoa Restaurant (1 Michelin Star)
When does your team of sommeliers recommend a wine by Remírez de Ganuza?
Both the whites and reds, although each has a different style, have good acidity and freshness, which is something demanded by diners. We can recommend them on various occasions, especially when the customer is looking for quality local wines. The vast majority of those who are already fans of the winery are Spanish clients with knowledge of quality wines.
Eneko Atxa, Azurmendi Restaurant (3 Michelin Stars)
What two pairings –one classic and another a little riskier– would you propose with one of your dishes?
As a classic pairing, I would choose Remírez de Ganuza Blanco Reserva 2010, accompanied by roasted, peeled lobster in its juice with a hint of coffee. The second option would be Remírez de Ganuza Gran Reserva 2005, accompanied by the Iberian castañeta cut ham with Idiazabal cheese bonbons and black truffle.
Pedro Subijana, Akelarre Restaurant (3 Michelin Stars)
What is your favorite Remírez de Ganuza wine?
I would choose two: Remírez de Ganuza Blanco 2017 barrel fermented, which is a wine that transmits elegant sensations with a good balance between hints of fruity flavors and flickers of fluffy pastries; and Fincas de Ganuza Reserva 2013, a well-defined wine with a great balance between the fruit and the toasted aromas, probably one of the best ‘Reserva’ (‘Reserve’) Rioja wines in terms of the value for the money.
